An annual tradition to welcome summer in Georgia
There is something magical about standing on the damp grass in the early morning light, surrounded by people all waiting for trailers to roll in, baskets to be unloaded, and bursts of color to appear in the sky.
Seeing everyone from kids to adults with their necks stretched toward the clouds as they watch huge balloons take off fills my heart with pure joy. I can't quite put my finger on what makes this moment so special, but it gets me every time.
Watching the balloons take off for the Helen to Atlanta Balloon Race has become an annual tradition for my family, and a sign that summer has begun.

With any luck, this will be our third year attending. The first year, we stayed overnight in Helen to do some sightseeing, and last year, we drove up on the same day -- making sure to arrive early to catch the take-off at 7 AM.

About the Event
The Helen to the Atlantic Hot Air Balloon Race is the South's oldest balloon event and America's only long-distance hot air balloon competition. The race begins in Helen and finishes at I-95 (anywhere between Maine and Miami). The shortest distance is 225 miles, and the race usually takes a couple of days to complete. The winner is the first person to cross I-95 or whoever is ahead at sunset on Friday, June 6, 2025.

Planning Your Visit
If you're considering a trip to Helen to experience the Balloon Race for yourself, here are a few tips from our previous visits:
Location: Across the river from Cool River Tubing, here's a map (or just follow the traffic!)
Parking is $10 (bring cash -- I can't remember if they take cards)
Arrive early!
Dress warm, it can be chilly in the morning
The grounds can be wet, so wear appropriate shoes
Bring snacks -- we couldn't find a place to eat that didn't have a huge wait after the event.
Check the weather before you go - wind and rain are a no-go for balloons
Short Tethered Rides are available for $10 per person (subject to change)
I hope you get a chance to enjoy this unique Georgia experience!
