10 Best Things to Do Near Helen, GA

Helen gets a lot of attention for its Bavarian theme, and while there's plenty to keep you busy in the downtown alpine-inspired area, there are also so many wonderful places to explore nearby -- from waterfalls to vineyards and homemade ice cream at a local creamery.

My list includes a mix of iconic experiences, like tubing down the Chattahoochee, and some things you might not know about, like the annual Victorian Christmas event at Hardman Farm.

I capped the list at 10, but it should probably be longer -- there is a lot to do in this corner of Georgia!

Helen to the Atlantic Balloon Race

This only happens once a year (late May/early June), and it's such a wonderful tradition! You can find more information on their website.

Make sure to arrive early on the first day of the event if you want to see the balloons depart for the race (we get there around 6 AM). They have balloon events in the morning and evening (no events during the afternoon). Dress in layers, as the morning can be chilly, and bring snacks -- we found it difficult to find somewhere to eat after the event that didn't have a long line.

Enjoy the View at JumpinGoat Coffee Roastery

There are two JumpinGoat locations -- so make sure to go to the Cleveland location at 915 Helen Hwy if you want to see one of the best views in Georgia!

You'll find coffee, tea, signature lattes, a small food menu, wine, beer, and mead. There's a little something for everyone, and they also host regular events and live music.

See a Double Waterfall

Anna Ruby Falls is a short, moderately steep hike (less than 1 mile round-trip) on a paved trail just a few minutes outside Helen. If you're in the area, it's a great waterfall to add to your list! You'll find a visitor center and picnic area. There is also a 0.1-mile, fully accessible paved trail called Lion's Eye Trail that is wheelchair-friendly and has a guide cable with Braille signs.

Admission to Anna Ruby Falls Recreation Area is $6 per person for visitors 16 years and older.

Go River Tubing on the Chattahoochee

You can't visit Helen in the summer without seeing all those tubes! It's one of the most popular activities in the area for good reason -- it's such a relaxing and fun way to spend the day. There are several outfitters in the area, and I recommend splurging for a push stick in case you get stuck (the odds are high). If tubing isn't your thing, you can always watch from one of the riverside restaurants.

Visit Betty's Country Store

Betty's (18 Yonah St) has been around since 1973! It started as an 800-square-foot shop just across the street from the current location. Now it's a 10,000-square-foot Helen landmark. Not only is it absolutely charming inside and out, but it's a great place to shop. They have the largest German beer selection in Georgia, but my favorite things will always be the sour pickles and giant cookies. I stock up on picnic supplies here whenever I am in the area.

Betty's also has an outdoor bar serving drinks, breakfast, and sandwiches.

Eat Ice Cream at Mountain Fresh Creamery

Mountain Fresh Creamery has been a family favorite for years! When my kids were little, nothing was more exciting than spotting that giant cow on the side of the road. Tip: Bring a cooler with ice because they sell pints and other dairy products in the small on-site retail store.

Visit Fred's Famous Peanuts

Fred's Famous Peanuts (17 Clayton Rd) is located just up the road from Betty's. It's a classic country farm stand with -- you guessed it -- peanuts! They have samples for you to try (the fried peanuts are my favorite). They also sell other items, including some delicious sticky buns -- definitely worth picking up if you have a sweet tooth.

Sip Wine at a Vineyard

If you've followed my account for a while, then you already know one of my favorite ways to spend the day is at a Georgia vineyard. We are so lucky to have so many wonderful vineyards in this area, including Kaya, The Cottage, and Yonah Mountain Vineyards, to name a few.

Eat Truffles at Hansel and Gretel

Hansel and Gretel Candy Kitchen (8651 N. Main St.) is a must-stop on any visit to Helen. Located right on the main street and in business since 1973, this shop oozes with charm and nostalgia. You can pick just one chocolate or go home with a full box. I try not to leave Helen without at least one truffle!

Experience a Victorian Christmas

Every December, Hardman Farm welcomes guests to attend a Christmas party set in the 1800s. You'll arrive by horse and carriage and be greeted at the door by costumed guests. You can explore the mansion, eat fresh-baked sorghum cookies, take a horse-drawn wagon ride, make s'mores, and more. It's a great event to help support Georgia State Parks!

I hope this list gives you some ideas to help you start planning your next (or first) trip to Helen, Ga.!
