Feel Like You're in Stars Hollow Only Two Hours from Atlanta
Clayton is one of Georgia’s best-kept secrets. It’s truly the Stars Hollow of mountain towns. It’s warm and friendly with a collection of the most beautiful shops, incredible places to stay, great food, unique things to do, and some of the best views in the entire state.
If you’re looking for a perfect North Georgia escape that feels special and a little under-the-radar, this is it. I’ve always loved Clayton — and here’s the perfect way to spend 24-hours here.
👉 SAVE THE DATE: The Annual Ramshackle Festival is back on Saturday, June 6, 2026! This is Clayton’s biggest event of the year with live music, shopping, and lots of delicious local food. This is a great time to experience the best of Clayton all in one place!

DAY ONE
Stop 1: Start with Coffee
The hardest part of every visit to White Birch Provisions (60 E Savannah St) is deciding what to order.
Everything is made in-house, and the full espresso bar always has the most unique seasonal drinks. You really can’t go wrong with anything here (though I can never resist the walnut banana bread and oatmeal raisin cookies).
TIP: White Birch also operates the White Birch Inn (28 E Savannah St) on the property — it’s beautiful and definitely on my list for a future romantic stay!

Stop 2: Go Shopping
My favorite part about Clayton is how absolutely charming the downtown is. I was chatting with someone who told me she feels like Lorelai Gilmore every time she walks downtown—and honestly, there’s no better way to describe it. It truly feels like stepping into Stars Hollow.
You’ll find so many local shops — from long-standing favorites like Reeves (here since 1928!) to lots of unique boutiques and galleries. You could easily spend hours wandering in and out of the stores (which is exactly what I did).
You don’t need a plan here— just stroll. But, if you want a starting point, here are all the places I visited, and you can’t go wrong with any of them:
Two Sisters Shop + Butler Galleries (74 N Main St) — a fun blend of gifts, art, and antiques
Reeves (46 S Main St) — the oldest store in Clayton and a true piece of local history
Isadora Popper (33 N Main St) — a creative, colorful space for home goods and yarn
Farmhouse PoundCakes (108 N Main St) — a cozy bakery and tearoom with Scottish goods
Madison's on Main (41 N Main St) — a pretty boutique with jewelry, clothing, and more
Lulu & Tully's (11 N Main St) — an inspired shop with finds from local artists
Idle + Wild (35 E Savannah St) —a beautifully curated boutique for furniture and decor

Stop 3: Grab Lunch
Hopefully, by now you’ve worked up an appetite from exploring downtown. While Clayton has plenty of sit-down options, I love the idea of grabbing lunch for a picnic (at the next stop).
Swing by Henri’s Bakery & Deli (102 S Main St), a beloved Georgia institution— while the Clayton location is newer, the original has been around since 1929. You’ll find favorites like their French dip, chicken salad, and the Mexican sandwich.
If you want a real insider favorite, ask for “the Chelsea” — it’s the owner’s take on the Mexican sandwich, served in a wrap with turkey (instead of ham) and extra banana peppers. It's so good!

Stop 4: Visit Georgia’s Highest State Park
Some of the most beautiful views in the state can be found at Black Rock Mountain State Park (3085 Black Rock Mountain Pkwy, Mountain City, GA), just a short drive north of downtown Clayton
Once you arrive, head toward the visitor center and gift shop area, where you’ll find plenty of parking and a picnic pavilion. Don’t skip the gift shop — at the back of the store are two porches with what might be the best views from any gift shop in Georgia.
NOTE: There is a $10 parking/entrance fee. The main overlook near the visitor center is easily accessible (as is the gift shop), although the area closest to the railing requires walking on rocks.

Stop 5: Discover Something New
The Foxfire Museum (98 Foxfire Ln, Mountain City) has been on my list for so long! I am so glad I finally visited. It’s an easy stop on your way back down the mountain, where you’ll find over 20 historic log buildings, each with artifacts from Appalachian life between 1820 and 1940.
One of the most interesting parts is learning the story behind the museum — it was created by local students who started a magazine, became national bestsellers, and used the royalties to start this museum to preserve Appalachian culture.
TIP: There is also a children’s village with kid-size cabins and a beautiful chapel where ringing the bell is encouraged.

Stop 6: Treat Yourself
After your mountain adventures, relax at either Currahee Brewing Company (93 W Savannah St), which has indoor and outdoor seating, pool tables, games, and a great selection of beers on tap, or head over to Main Street Chocolates (90 N Main St) for some ice cream or a sweet treat (so many options!). You really can’t go wrong either way (or, you can do both like I did).

Stop 7: Stay the Night
Clayton has several wonderful places to spend the night, including cozy inns like Beechwood & White Birch. For this visit, I stayed at the Bridge Creek Inn (60 S Main St), a modern, 45-room boutique hotel that just opened in 2023 and has quickly become a favorite. I love that it’s in a historic building right on Main Street and has its own restaurant and coffee shop.
The design is beautiful, the staff is welcoming, and the location is very convenient for walking to everything downtown. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay here!
TIP: Make sure to check out the local art throughout the lobby area — it’s a really nice touch.

Stop 8: Eat Dinner
Vandiver (located inside Bridge Creek Inn) is such a great addition to Clayton! I have a weakness for hotel bars and restaurants, and this one is beautiful — it’s sophisticated without feeling stuffy, and the service was excellent.
And the best part? After a full meal (including the most delicious, complimentary warm rolls served with smoky butter), you can amble back up to your room with a to-go dessert or…

Stop 9: Sip a Nightcap
Oldknow Bev Co (301 N Main St) is a beautifully designed distillery within walking distance of downtown. They serve creative cocktails, including a wide variety of mocktails.
On the bartender’s recommendation, I ordered a Fall of Eden, which might have ruined me for all other mocktails -- it’s so delicious. Their focus on botanicals really shines through, and it’s such a fun vibe to wind down the evening.

DAY TWO
Stop 1: Wake Up with Yoga
While I didn’t have time to take a full class on this visit, Thrive Wellness Hub (29 Falcon St.) came highly recommended—and after stopping in, it’s easy to see why. I immediately felt at ease chatting with the instructor, and the space smelled like spa heaven.
In addition to yoga, they host a variety of events, including guided hikes, so it’s definitely worth checking their schedule ahead of your trip. It’s the kind of place that could easily become a highlight of your visit.

Stop 2: Pick Flowers
Valley Girl Flower Farm (2455 Bridge Creek Rd, Tiger, GA) is a beautiful, creekside farm offering seasonal you-pick options, creative classes, and farm-hosted events (all visits must be booked in advance unless it's a you-pick day).
Be sure to check out their seasonal events, like the Mother’s Day Tea (dog and cat moms included!) on May 9.
NOTE: The farm is pet-friendly, so four-legged friends are welcome!

Stop 3: Go to a Vineyard
If you have time on the way home, stop by Tiger Mountain Vineyard (2592 Old 441 S, Tiger, GA). It’s open on weekends and is such a peaceful spot to relax and take in the views.

If You Have Extra Time
On your way out of town, stop by the newly opened G.O.A.T. Landing (3026 US-441, Tiger, GA). This is not the old Goats on a Roof, but a new concept filled with unique finds you won’t find anywhere else.
I loved the home goods collection (especially the lights), the playful design of the building, and, of course, seeing the cute goats still hanging out outside!

Make sure to save this 24-hour itinerary for Clayton, GA, for the next time you need an easy getaway from Atlanta filled with amazing local shops, unique places to stay, and lots of fun things to do!
I hope you found this helpful!
