If you’re staying close to home this spring but still want it to feel like an escape, this list is for you!
Go on an Eco-Spider ATV Tour at Historic Banning Mills
I've driven a go-kart before, but nothing could have prepared me for the Eco-Spider tour at Historic Banning Mills. This electric vehicle has spider-like arms that move independently while the seat operates like a pendulum — keeping you level no matter what the terrain. It's a genuinely cool feeling! The tour lasts about 1 to 1.5 hours along paved roads, dirt trails, and bridges, with stops to learn about the area along the way. And, because all the controls are near the steering wheel, it's also accessible for guests with reduced mobility.
The great thing about Banning Mills is that you can make this a day trip or stay overnight in one of their many different lodging options. We stayed in a double-decker treehouse with two floors and enough room to comfortably fit a family of four, right next to the pool and main lodge.

Experience a "Cruise Ship on Land" at Callaway Resort & Gardens
If you've ever wanted to take a vacation where everyone in your family — from the littlest to the biggest— is actually happy, Callaway Resort & Gardens is a great option. Someone once described it to me as a "cruise ship on land," and after a weekend here with my family, I can see why.
Spread across 2,500 acres, this resort has everything. Multiple dining locations, a spa, pools, beach access, and more activities than you can pack into one stay — biking, kayaking, zip lining, mini golf, and pedal boats. Our absolute favorite thing to do was cruise the grounds in a rented golf cart -- it's worth the splurge!

Escape to Bryson City, North Carolina
About 3 hours from Atlanta, Bryson City is a favorite for good reason — whitewater rafting on the Nantahala River, scenic train rides through the mountains, zip lining, fly fishing, hiking, and surprisingly great food for such a small town. Spring is a magical time to visit when everything is in bloom, and the summer crowds haven't arrived yet.

Discover Fairyland Caverns and Epic Views at Rock City
I am a little obsessed with Rock City. Perched on Lookout Mountain just outside Chattanooga, it's one of those places I find myself visiting again and again. You'll find rock formations, views of seven states, and the most unique Fairyland Caverns. It's so magical! This corner of Georgia is one of my favorite places in the entire Southeast, and I don't think I'll ever get tired of visiting.

Hit Three World-Class Museums in One Day in Cartersville
Cartersville is only an hour north of Atlanta, and it's home to three incredible museums, two of which are Smithsonian-affiliated!
Dig for fossils, pan for gems, and explore a brand-new space gallery with a dollhouse replica of the International Space Station (open through mid-April 2026)at the Tellus Science Museum.
View a stunning, rotating collection of rare vehicles in the beautiful Savoy Automobile Museum
See the largest permanent exhibition of Western art in the country (with a great play space on the lower level for the kids) at the Booth Western Art Museum.
Also in the area and definitely worth a visit are the Etowah Indian Mounds -- a quiet 54-acre archaeological site where you can feel the history.

Soak Up the Gulf Coast in Pensacola
The Emerald Coast is everything you've heard — crystal-clear water, sugar-white sand — but Pensacola also has amazing culture, excellent food, and fascinating history. I love the mix of the marina-adjacent downtown with the sandy beachside. It's like two completely different vacations in one.
We couldn't decide where to stay (beach vs. town), so we did both and split our stay between a houseboat downtown and a hotel on the beach (with the best lazy river), and I would do the same thing again in a heartbeat!

Enjoy the View (and Burn Some Energy) at Tallulah Gorge
Tallulah Gorge State Park is one of Georgia's most beautiful places — nearly 1,000 feet deep, with waterfalls, suspension bridges, and trail options for every ability level. If you want the full experience, get ready to climb some stairs! If you'd rather take it in without the hike, there are stunning overlook views and also a small nature center.
And, don't miss the teeny tiny town of Lakemont, located right nearby, and also Tallulah 1882, a coffee shop/tea house in a converted train depot.

See a 13 Foot Peanut (and More)
If you've lived in Georgia for any length of time and haven't made it to Plains, this is your sign to go. The hometown of Jimmy Carter is one of the most interesting places in Georgia. You'll see the train depot that served as his 1976 presidential campaign headquarters, the boyhood farm where he grew up, and the high school he attended alongside Rosalynn. Make sure to spend some time in the small downtown -- you'll find a unique political memorabilia shop and Plains' famous peanut butter ice cream!

Go Camping in Luxury
If your idea of camping involves a comfortable bed and a hot shower, Timberline Glamping is for you. My family has been twice -- once in Auburn, Alabama, and once at Unicoi State Park. Both experiences were big memory-makers. My family of 5 shared the same tent, but with a queen bed and double bunks, there is plenty of room for everyone to spread out. Both locations also had a lake nearby for swimming, which we loved!
Pack some games, food, and s'more ingredients -- this is a great (stress-free) family vacation.

Discover So Much to Do in Columbus
Columbus, GA, tends to fly under the radar, and it's genuinely one of my favorite places to visit in Georgia. Sitting right on the Chattahoochee River, it has a beautiful RiverWalk, a thriving arts scene, the National Infantry Museum, some of the best urban whitewater in the country, great food, and more! My family loved visiting the world's largest Lunchbox Museum, Coca Cola Space Science Center, and I fell in love with The Bo Bartlett Center and the cobbled streets of the historic district.

Bonus: Take a Mystery Trip
No destination, no agenda — just four mystery envelopes, a full tank of gas, and a willingness to see what you find. We've done this twice as a family, and I love that I get to enjoy the surprise with zero planning.
