24 Hours in Highlands, NC

Your Perfect Weekend Getaway from Atlanta

This visit marked my third trip to beautiful Highlands, North Carolina, and it was my second stay at the Skyline Lodge. I celebrated my wedding anniversary on my first visit and this time, I was thrilled to be invited to one of their incredible chef's dinners. It was the perfect excuse to explore one of my favorite mountain towns all over again!

Disclosure: I was hosted by Skyline Lodge. As always all opinions are my own.

Stop 1: Dry Falls

While I was in town, I decided to explore some new places I hadn't been to before. Usually, I'm all about trying different foods when I travel, but this time I had to save my appetite so I opted to take in some nature. My first stop was Dry Falls, a beautiful waterfall that you can walk behind!

I visited this waterfall twice during my trip, waking up early on departure day so I could have it all to myself. It was absolutely worth it.  There is a $5 parking fee, but trust me, the views are stunning and it’s an easy walk from the parking lot to the falls.

Stop 2: Sequoyah Falls

The second waterfall I visited, Sequoyah Falls (1896 Franklin Rd, Highlands, NC) turned out to be the backside of a dam, not a natural waterfall but it's still worth a visit. There is a small parking lot nearby and it makes a great spot for photos. Just a heads up, it’s a short walk from the parking lot, but you’ll need to climb over a large pipe to get this view.  I managed to do it in a dress, but just wanted to point it out so you’re prepared.

Stop 3: Bascom Art Center

On the way back to town, I stopped by the Bascom Art Center. It's a beautiful art museum with several gallery spaces, a pottery studio, and a gift shop. If you go with kids, check out the Story Walk with interactive experiences along the way.

Stop 4: Exploring Downtown

One of the things I love most about Highlands is strolling the charming streets of downtown. I'm not sure there's a more beautifully landscaped downtown than Highlands, North Carolina! And, let’s not forget about the shopping — it’s a must-do.

Stay: Skyline Lodge

I could spend days exploring this area, but the whole reason for this visit was to attend “Under the Stars, on the Rocks,” an al-fresco dining experience held at Skyline Lodge overlooking the Blue Ridge mountains. This dinner series features renowned guest chefs and is recognized as one of the top culinary events of Western North Carolina.

During my visit, I got to watch Chef Meherwan Irani of Chai Pani collaborate with the head chef of Oaks Steakhouse, Skyline's on-site restaurant. All guests were treated to a variety of passed appetizers, a welcome cocktail, and a four-course meal with wine pairings -- ending with a glass of champagne topped with gold flakes for dessert. It was a deliciously unforgettable experience!

For those who love mid-century modern architecture, the Skyline Lodge is an absolute must. Much of the original architecture has been preserved. If you go, make sure to look for the pictures of what the hotel looked like before the renovation. And, don't miss dinner at Oaks Steakhouse -- if you can't make it for a full meal here, you can also grab a drink at the bar.

Thank you to Skyline Lodge for inviting me to this amazing event. I love any excuse to visit Highlands, NC, especially if it's food related!

If you're looking for a beautiful and easy getaway from Atlanta, make sure to add this area to your list!
